Small Steps, Big Changes: Shatto Place Quick Build

This week LADOT and our teammates KOA piloted a “quick build” street design that the HERE team helped to conceptualize.  The event was a success, with the enthusiastic participation of students from Young Oak Kim Academy.  The team tested out a wide extended “Kids Space” and a safer drop off/pick up lane configuration, along with delineators in the middle of the street to help prevent u-turns. The goal was to show how the street would function when transformed in the future.  Early in 2024, we will be installing a more permanent “Kids Space”.

Within the Kids Space, the Kim Academy students will help us paint a street mural with a design inspired by conversations with the students. The “Faces of Yoka” art uses simple shapes and happy colors, celebrating unity and diversity. We love to show students the positive impact of urban planning and design in the physical environment. Keep your eyes out for more information about our install in early 2024.
