What We've Been Up To...

It's been a fun few months at HERE, as we've been busy designing a half a dozen street design pilot projects throughout the Southern California region and putting together some fun pop-up community events.

Temporary Street Design. HERE is helping to design various temporary street improvements in cities around the region, like Calexico (near the US border with Mexico), Pasadena, Glendale, El Monte, and Los Angeles. The goal is to install public realm improvements for 12-24 months, so the community can test them out and gauge their benefits. Our team has been researching materials, designing people-spaces, selecting trees and lighting, and designing custom mural designs and art for the streets. The goal is to be clever and "scrappy", seeing how much beauty we can create and how much change we can make, through quick and affordable improvements!

Community "Pop-ups" All Around. HERE has held a variety of community pop-up events, creating custom large-scale games, a fun "shopping" activity, and community art building.  Today we were in Koreatown working with a bunch of Middle School students to envision a street mural.  Last week, in Anaheim talking to the community about street improvements to support transit use.  Each conversation is different, but all are colorful, fun, and easy to join.
